In Europe and the United States, lighting scented candles has become a daily ritual, enhancing moments like meals, baths, and bedtime with different scents for various seasons and purposes.
However, encountering issues like incomplete combustion or black smoke can diminish the wonderful effects of these fragrant moments. Learning how to light and maintain candles properly is essential.
By following a few simple steps, you can ensure a consistent and pleasant fragrance experience.
1. Before Lighting Candles
Before lighting a candle, always trim the wick to a length of 0.5-0.8cm, maintaining it evenly twisted with a finger. This ensures an even burn, releases the scent effectively, and reduces the production of black smoke.
Avoid trimming the wick immediately after extinguishing to prevent shavings from falling into the wax.
2. Lighting the Candle
The initial lighting of a candle is crucial for subsequent burns. Burn the candle for an hour (or longer for large candles) to allow the surface to melt evenly, preventing burnt edges in the future. Limit burning to a maximum of 3 hours at a stretch.
3. Extinguishing Candles
Use professional candle extinguishing equipment or lids to put out candles, avoiding blowing as it can cause black smoke or misalign the wick. While the wax is still liquid, use scissors or cotton swabs to center the wick.
4. Care and Storage
When not in use, protect the candle from dust by using a lid or storing it in a box. Finish using candles within six months to prevent essential oil evaporation. Wipe off any dust with a cotton pad and alcohol.
5. Incomplete Combustion Remedies
If the candle burns unevenly or the wick becomes skewed, try scraping wax residue from the edges into the melted wax after extinguishing the flame. Alternatively, wrap the burning candle with aluminum foil, leaving space in the middle for air circulation.
6. Candle Peripheral Utensils
Enhance your fragrance experience with additional candle-related tools:
- Candle Extinguishing Cover: Quickly extinguishes the flame with minimal black smoke.
- Candle Wick Scissors: Trim the extinguished wick to 0.5-0.8cm without dropping it into the candle.
- Candle Cover: Adds beauty and can be purchased to match the candle's style.
Candle Cup Cleaning and Application
1. After burning candles, repurpose candle cups by cleaning them and using them for other purposes.
2. Pour hot water into the candle jar to melt the remaining wax, allowing easy removal.
3. If wax remains, refrigerate the jar for two hours, then scrape off the wax. Avoid pouring wax directly into the sink to prevent clogging.
